We hate to use cliched phrases like "game changer" or "revolutionary", but we reluctantly think the Motorola DS9208 could well be.  We've been waiting for a reasonably priced scanner that can scan reliably and easily from LCD screens and the LS9208 from Motorola fits the bill.  The world of 2D barcodes is exploding and retailers need to be able to take advantage of this opportunity and the Motorola DS9208 is going to meet that need exactly.

Easy to use

The DS9208 is like a camera - there are no laser lines to align to - simply put the barcode in front of the scanner (no need to make sure it's turned the correct way) and the scanner does the rest.

Good looking

The DS9208 is attractive.  This model is black but there's also a white model available.  Slim and small, it has a window as high up as possible with some large good read lights to confirm when you've successfully read your barcode.  If you don't want to look at your scanner, simply listen out for the beeper to confirm your barcode has been decoded.  The beeper can be adjusted by using the button, no need to get out the manual to adjust the volume.

Scanning coupons and from screens

2D barcodes and standard retail barcodes can be read equally well with the DS9208, but 2D codes give you the opportunity to read coupons containing much more information - so you can trace the coupon back, so you can ensure it's not a copy and so on.  The most useful feature though, is the ability to scan from mobile phones, PDAs and other LCD screens.  Instead of printing coupons and posting them out, you send them via SMS message or email, for instant results.  Instead of printing the manual that comes with the DS9208, you can simply scan the setup codes directly from your computer screen.  Standard laser barcode readers aren't able to read from screens, giving the DS9208 a distinct advantage.

Picklist Mode

One of the disadvantages of a scanner that reads an area is the precision needed for scanning individual codes if you need to.  For example, how do you read a single code from a menu of ten codes?  The DS9208 has a picklist mode where you can select just one code to read.  Press the button, point the targeting dot at the barcode you want and scan the code.  Alternatively, you can use the DS9208 to read multiple codes.  By programming it, you can scan more than one code and choose which codes to ignore.

Programming the DS9208

Motorola ship the scanner with software used to configure it.  Called 123Scan, this software can be used to set up the scanner.  You can print setup barcodes from 123Scan that you use to program multiple DS9208s.

The DS9208 in the workplace

The DS9208 is IP50 rated (dust proof) and is designed to survive a 1.5m drop to concrete.  If you're worried about the scanner dropping to concrete you can use the wall mount kit or locking base.  These items will secure your scanner to the desk, counter or wall.

The future of barcoding

The Motorola DS9208 is Motorola's next generation of barcode readers.  2D capable along with a phone scanning capability - the DS9208 is set to cope with all opportunities for many years ahead.
