Smartphones vs Ruggedized Mobile Computers

Since the launch of mobile broadband (3G and all that), Smartphones have become the tool of choice for the mobile business.  While it seems as though everyone has a smartphone for their business these days, a study commissioned by one of the large handheld terminal makers, has revealed that smartphones aren't as popular as you might imagine.  A survey carried out by Harris Executive Omnibus revealed that nearly a third of Fortune 1000 executives are investing in ruggedized handhelds, allowing them to go paperless, which will ultimately increase efficiency and reduce costs.  Of the managers surveyed, a huge 67% are interested in replacing their consumer-grade PDAs, cell phones and smartphones with ruggedized handheld devices.

94% of executives use a PDA or smart phone.  Of that number, 72% are using cell phones and interestingly 23% are currently using ruggedized handhelds.

The survey focused on cutting costs by going paperless, with 38% of managers claiming to be already paperless, 29% are transitioning to paperless operations, and 15% are planning to go paperless in the near future.

Despite the fact that most workers currently use PDAs or smartphones, the future looks bright for ruggedized mobile computers. One argument was that smaller businesses prefer to save money on less durable consumer products, but taking into account the total cost of ownership over time, tougher saves money in the long run.
