How to choose the right labels.

Thermal Labels
Plain paper & thermal labels	Thermal labels react to heat and turn black.  When they are put through a thermal printer the image is printed on the labels without needing ink.  This makes thermal labels (or direct thermal) easy to use and reasonably low cost. Thermal labels do not last as long as labels printed using inks.  They turn brown with heat so if they are left in the sun they turn black.  Also - thermal labels increase the wear on the printer's printhead, so the printers head needs replacing more frequently. Plain paper labels
Plain paper shipping label	Plain paper labels are the cheapest labels available.  They are easy to use and come in a wide range of sizes.  Some are coated so the image printed on them is sharper and more durable.  Some labels are treated to provide a shiny (gloss) surface.  Usually labels are produced with a permanent adhesive, but contact us for labels with glue designed for freezers or to be peeled off items (peelable adhesive or sometimes known as removable adhesive labels). Paper labels are ideal for items that need a long life label but aren't used to present the product.  Examples include outer case labels or carton labels. These labels need a thermal ink in order to produce the image on the label.  If using a gloss label, make sure you use an ink ribbon made from a mixture of wax and resin. Pre-printed labels
Pre-printed labels	Preprinted labels come in two forms.  A label preprinted with a single image re-printed hundreds or thousands of times is the simplest solution.  Barcode Products is able to produce full colour labels in single quantities up to millions of labels. 'Variable Data' Labels
Labels printed with incrementing numbers	A large proportion of our customers order labels pre-printed with 'variable data'.  This is where a client, for example, asks us for 1000 barcoded labels numbered from 1 to 1000 - to be used as product serial numbers or asset numbers.  Sometimes date code labels are needed.  Warehouse location labels are another use for Variable Data labels. Alternatively, clients may have a spreadsheet with stock codes or descriptions and they need these printed onto labels. Durable andMetal labels
Durable metal asset labels	Many solutions involve providing labels that can withstand wiping, scratching, tearing and washing.  Most often standard plastic labels are supplied.  Plastic labels are slightly more expensive than paper but are the only way to solve a problem.  Most thermal transfer printers will print onto plastic labels, although care must be taken to select a compatible ink ribbon.  Most plastic labels are not generally able to cope with years of exposure to the sun outdoors - expect a life of three to five years. Where labels need to last many years outdoors - or need to withstand considerable punishment - metal labels are often the only solution.  Pretty much any image can be printed in very high resolution onto metal labels or plates - including variable information such asset numbers or product serial numbers.  Metal plates can be supplied in a range of thicknesses, sizes and with or without adhesives.  Obviously metal labels are the most expensive labels.  Click here to read our article on Outdoor or weatherproof labels.
