How To Defend Yourself With A Barcode Scanner

Elderly Woman Attacks Robber
When Michael McInnis tried to rob a SevenEleven convenience store in Massachusetts, USA, he got more than he bargained with when an unnamed elderly woman took exception to the robbery.  Grabbing the barcode scanner on the counter she repeatedly attempted to strike the robber.

Whilst she failed to make contact with the thief, her actions prevented him getting more than $100 in cash before making his escape.

We commend the woman for her courage protecting the shop from attack.  Here are some product recommendations to the woman (and the shop for that matter).
  • The stand is the most useful part of the scanner – that’s where the weight is.
  • Don’t use the flexible stand you get with the Motorola LS2208, rigid stands deliver more force.
  • Using the scanner as a Bolas and swinging it around on the cord could be very effective.  Make sure you check the cable to ensure it’s not worn. (Note: email now for replacement cables for your scanner).
  • Attempts to dazzle the robber with a laser scanner are unlikely to work as the laser energy is very low.  A linear imager or CCD scanner would be completely ineffective, as they don’t use laser light.
  • Whilst the Honeywell/Metrologic MS1633 2D barcode scanner works no better as a weapon than other scanners, it can be used to identify the robber.  You can quickly configure it to photograph the criminal (providing you have the instruction manual to hand).
  • If you own a shop and are worried that you might fall victim to one of your own scanners, buy the Metrologic MS9540 which comes with a stand that can be attached to the counter.
