Portable Data Terminals
| Computers have revolutionised the office, by giving staff information to make decisions, streamlining administration and sending valuable data back to management. Whilst the office has been transformed, there’s still some work to be done at the front line — the service staff and workers who still need information but don’t have a desk. Hand held computers with bar code scanners are the answer and with the experience gained from hand portable barcode readers, we can help.

PDTs In Retail
| These handheld computers with bar code scanners are designed for light use, perhaps a stock check every week, or asset tracking around an office. They have limited capabilites and can't cope with the abuse they'd suffer in a workshop or delivery van. The products we feature in this range are ideal for retail or occaisional use. Industrial PDTs
| Industrial hand held computers are built to last and they're built to be relied upon. They come with rechargable batteries, water and dust resistence, extensive drop protection, long range reading, tough cases - all making them suitable for factories, loading bays, delivery vans and the outdoors. These units are meant to be used all day on one charge. Click here to see our industrial HHCs. |
Try these questions for starters:- What's the ultimate goal for employing handheld computers? — save the organisation time (avoid double data entry or reduce form filling), create competitive advantage (offer unique customer service or reduced lead times), become a source of revenue or reduce costs (fewer mistakes or reduced shipping errors)
- What do you want the hardware to do for you? — record what boxes were shipped to a customer or provide prices, stock levels and details relating to products or provide information relating to a previous visit to service a machine.
- What data do you want to get to and from your front line staff? Can you list it?
- Where does the work take place — is it vehicle based, indoors, outdoors, bright sumshine, exposed to extremes of heat or cold?
- Will it be used in low light conditions?
- Usage — used all-day everyday — or weekly?
- Will it require lots of data entry or is it mainly presenting information?
- Does the information need to be instantly available to other users or can it be uploaded or downloaded later?
- Will your network need to extend away from your premises?
- Pocket sized and lightweight — or would a 'brick on a stick' be easier to use?
- Is the amount of information too much for a few megabytes of memory – does it need to be linked to a large database?
- Does the worker need information in real time to help them make decisions?
- Do you need to scan barcodes or signatures?
- Would the unit need to read electronic tags?
- What sort of battery life is needed?
- Cost? Don't over look the cost of spare batteries, chargers, cradles, cables, training, support, trial equipment, installation and spare equipment.
